Why Cheat India Review: The Film Will Make You Ask 'Why'?
Even a week back, the nation was waiting for the release of Cheat India: Nakal Mein Hi Akal Hai. Then suddenly around a week before release, the name was changed to Why Cheat India. Now, after having watched the film, I have found the justification behind that addition. The film will actually make you ask just one question- why?
My ‘why’ questions were in abundance- why is the film so slow, why does the film lack coherence and the scenes spontaneity, why was Shreya Dhanwanthary’s character there or why were the songs there?
The film began well. You hear Emraan Hashmi’s voiceover while you see a small town boy struggle his way in Kota to become an engineer. Sattu (played by Snighdhadeep Chatterjee) aka Satyendra Dubey’s efforts do pay off and he bags a Rank of 287. But then he meets Rocky Bhaiiya aka Rakesh Singh and he persuades him to turn to a nakalmand from akalmand with money!
Till this point, the film was actually going pretty smooth and even though slow, I really wanted to know what will happen. But from this point, the story just takes off to some other tangent altogether and does not stop, even when the film ends.
At one point, Emraan Hasmi’s family is also shown with Shibani Bedi playing his wife. But what was the point of introducing that 20 minute family drama when it had no point in the film except for showing that he has a wife already with whom he has no relationship almost and that he has funded his family? That could’ve been done in 5 minutes max.
The same goes for the songs for the film that are basically useless, to say the least. But since it is an Emraan Hashmi film, the songs are good, but useless.
Another such unnecessary part was that of Nupur’s character played by Shreya Dhanwanthary. Shreya is amazing and she is talented, but that is of almost zero use in the film. I will recommend all to watch Ladies Room that is hands down more entertaining.
Emraan Hashmi is a seasoned actor and therefore, it is not new that he is performance will be good. But there was nothing more than we got to see of the actor, except for him trying very hard to make the bad dialogues sound dhanshu.
Director Soumik Sen seems to just have been left undecided about the plot, so he could not even decide what he wants to do in the film. If this was a means to show a mirror to the society, then this is not at all compelling enough and the treatment is very half hearted.
Really, if you want to see a film on the loopholes on education system, you should much rather go back to Taare Zameen Par or 3 Idiots. Yes, they do not tell the story of exam mafias and how people cheat and pass, but they are worth watching!
